Indian culture is rich of potent spices like haldi, which have been used foe therapeutic properties. Haldi ( Turmeric), popularly referred to as the ‘Asian yellow dye’ by the global chefs on the food channels today is not a mere dye or else it wouldn’t have found mention in ancient Indian scriptures like Garuda Purana, Devi Baghwatam, Vishnu Sutra, Charak Samhita , Tantrik texts to name a few.
In our traditional culinary wisdom, turmeric or haldi is not only used as an essential spice, but also regarded therapeutic and medicinal. Thus in the culinary wisdom , time tested recipes like Haldi milk exist . The West is only now getting aware of its health benefits and It is now being hailed as the superfood all across the globe for its antiseptic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and immunity enhancing properties. Common Mistakes committed while using Haldi to Boost Immunity
While Haldi Milk is a time tested recipe, there are many diet trends that suggest the use of Haldi in such a way that the bod y is not able to derive benefits.
Current Trend of Haldi Shots
Hailed as a super food, haldi is currently being consumed as Haldi shots in water, supplements, tea , smoothies, soups and what not. It is important to understand that just ingestion of food or herb doesn’t guarantee its absorption and assimilation. A conducive body environment along with all necessary co -factors will assist in bio availability of the key compound and its therapeutic properties. Our culinary wisdom has always been abreast with sustainable and responsible use of food. Emphasis should always be on a holistic and balanced view . Its not right to blow any one component of food out of proportion and haill it as a magic food.
If you are a novice to cooking processes, let me orient you that haldi has always gone into the ghee or cold pressed oils oil while cooking or tempering. . The reason for this cooking practice lies in a deeper understanding of how the core therapeutic compounds and anti oxidants of Haldi require essential fat for its absorption and assimilation. Thus using haldi in water as shots or tea or water based soups renders it unavailable towards any health reason. You have consumed it but lost whole purpose of its consumption!
